Sunrise at Diamond Head

Here's a picture of Diamond Head from our hotel. Remember when we tried to hike the trail a week earlier? Well, here we are on our last day in Hawaii and we haven't made it back. Granted the trail just opened up on Friday and it rained all day Saturday (we went to the Polynesian Cultural Center). While it had cleared up on Sunday we knew the trail would be pretty muddy, so we saved it for Monday even though we were leaving later in the afternoon. During the week we had talked to someone in passing and they suggested climbing the trail in the early morning and watching the sunrise. We thought that was a great idea. And, it was.

The trail itself is not that long. It's only .8 mile one way. Less than a mile, no problem, right? Well, in that short span it climbs 560 ft in elevation. It was a little tough, but the view from the top made it so worth it. And luckily, we had timed it just right. The park opened at 6am, we got there just a few minutes after that. Sunrise was slated for 6:48am which didn't give us a whole lot of time, but we made it up there with several minutes to spare.

Here's a view of Waikiki from Diamond Head in the early morning light just a few minutes before sunrise.

Rich was snapping away with the camera as the sun was coming up. Here's the first sliver of sun.

This picture taken about a minute later is my favorite. I just love the colors in the clouds. What a great way to start the day. What a workout!

Going down? So much easier.
