The Day After Election Day

Mom and Tín flew in on Election Day. We stayed up to see the results and speeches and then went to bed. The next morning we tried to find a newspaper on the way to the Metro. All the newspaper dispensers were empty. We checked again as we exited. All of those dispensers were empty.

We went to the DC Visitor Center located in the Ronald Reagan Building, picked up brochures and tour information and then headed out all the while looking for a newspaper. No luck.

We went to the White House Visitor Center and looked through the exhibits there. Mom and Tín had a tour scheduled for the following week and wanted to check out the area. From there we walked by the White House and I took a picture of them in front of it. We didn't really have any plans but weren't ready to head back to the apartment.

The DAR Museum is in the same area so Mom and I did a self-guided tour of the period rooms and walked through the exhibit, Return to Toyland, which features antique toys from the museum's collections.

From there we walked up the street toward a Metro stop checking for any place that might have a newspaper. Still no luck. After a quick bite for dinner we headed back to the apartment and gave up hope that we'd get a paper.

When we got back I turned on the computer to check my email. What's this? One of the blogs that I subscribe to posted that The Washington Post was putting out a special edition and listed places that it would be delivered to. I ran right back out the door and up the road a bit to my local CVS. They hadn't gotten the delivery yet, but were taking names. I'm so happy they did that as I found out later that some people waited in lines for over two hours for the special edition to be delivered. The next morning we finally got the paper we'd spent all day looking for. A little piece of history.
