Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in honor of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family. The Museum was established to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of the Princess, and has expanded to include millions of artifacts, documents and photographs about Hawai‘i and other Pacific island cultures.
Hawaiian Hall was closed as it's undergoing a two-year renovation, but there were still other exhibits to see. Polynesian Hall was most interesting with two floors of artifacts from the various Polynesian cultures. I also saw a show at the planetarium called "Explorers of Polynesia." We learned how Polynesian voyagers used the stars to navigate and even took a trip from Hawaii to Tahiti! Well, actually we saw how the sky would change on such a trip.
I'm so used to not being able to take pictures in museums, that I didn't even realize I could have taken pictures there until I was on my way out.
When I got back to the hotel, the sun was starting to set. It was cloudy the whole week we were there so I never did get a nice picture of the sun setting over the water, but I got this one of it setting into the clouds.
